Wikipedia was launched on January 15, 2001, by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger. In 2007, Wikipedia entered the top 10 list of most popular websites in the US, according to comScore Networks. Wikipedia provides a vast source of information and the interlinking between the articles is really great that we not only get info about one particular article but also info on any article which is relevant to the searched article.

So in this post, I'm going to show you how to download the famous Wikipedia for free offline reading. This step is completely legal. You can download Wikipedia easily though you will need huge storage capacity and some time.There are many reasons why you want to have your own personal copy of Wikipedia.Whatever your reason is, this is not a myth and actually, you can download it easily with a software.

If you're downloading the text version of Wikipedia, you'll need about 50 GB of storage space and downloading all images will cost another 100 GB. You can also download Wikipedia from official download page by using a BitTorrent client which is a bit hard. The easiest way is to use an App called  Xowa which allows you to download multiple wikis onto your devices.This software requires that you have JAVA installed on your PC, which you can download from here.

STEP 1: Downloading and extracting the required Apps 
                 
To begin with, go to Xowa's Download page and install the setup that suits your JAVA installation (x86 or x64) not your system architecture. Once downloaded extract the ZIP file somewhere on your hard drive.

 STEP 2: Using the Xowa Software for download Wikis 

Tools==>Download Central

Once extracted, double-click on Xowa.exe to start the application. Once the application has started click on Tools menu and then select Download Central from the menu.

 From the download central you can download a variety of your favorite wikis including Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikiquote etc. To queue a wiki click the '+' icon and press the play button to start downloading.

STEP 3: Accessing Your Content And Storage Details

 You can access your downloaded wikis in the upper left corner of the browser window.Please note that it'll take 420 MB of hard disk space for the simple version of Wikipedia which contains less than 130,000 articles and will take another 2GB for images.

The full English version of Wikipedia is 45 GB and adding the images will cost you another 99 GB, so that's about 150GB in all. Please note that this will take a considerable amount of time and storage capacity, so be prepared!!
