What Is DDOS Attack And How To Protect Your Network From It

If you're a network admin, the DDOS attack is one of the worst things you ever wanna face in your personal network.DDOS means Distributed Denial Of Service and it is used to temporarily crash or shut down an online website or organization network.

This method is famous among hackers as it makes a website unavailable to the intended users. This attack is also called as the Ping of Death as the main attack strategy is by pinging requests.

A DDOS attack is accomplished when a hacker tries to flood tremendous amount of requests to a particular website which is beyond the amount of traffic the site can handle, thereby overloading and finally crashing the server down.An attacker often uses more than 100 types of IP address to initiate a DDOS attack.
A DDOS attack is different from a DOS attack where the attacks take place from one destination or source whereas in the case of DDOS the attack originates from multiple sources, i.e. different locations.

This makes it especially difficult to stop the attack by blocking a single IP address as the flooding takes place from different destinations.

The scale of DDOS attacks has increased and as of 2016, it can send one terabyte per seconds worth requests.Usually, full-fledged DDOS attacks will crash a server within 20-30 min if the attacker has advanced equipment and a fast internet and it will take a minimum of 1-2 hrs to bring the server back online once shut down.

So here's an article on how to protect your personal and other public websites from DDOS attacks:

1. Using Access Control List or ACL in your Router

If your using a router make sure you enable Access Control List or ACL in short. This works by allowing only the devices you specify in the router settings to connect to your network routers and prevents all other outside devices from connecting to your router.

This is a very useful and advanced feature which is present in almost all decent routers. You can also deny certain device IP address which is obvious carriers off DDOS.

2. Buy more Bandwidth for your server

Probably the best way to face DDOS attack is to buy extra bandwidth, which you can use during an emergency DDOS attack to bring the site back online and to diagnose the attack origin. It can only increase your website speed.

3. Hire Third_Party DDOS protection service to Protect Your Website

There are several DDOS protection services which can protect your website from DDOS. One of the best known is CloudFlare, which has a both business and enterprise plan.

4.Block ICMP in your Router

Block ICMP in your Router to protect your network and enable only while troubleshooting your network.

5. Talk with DDOS Expert

Talk with a DDOS expert and understand the different types of DDOS attacks and how to lay your defenses in a way to prevent further attacks if a sudden attack breaks out. Find out ways to isolate a known attack. The strategy is the key!!!

6.Optimize Your Web server

You can also try optimizing your webserver to make it more robust, reliable and handle more requests. Try Apache booster plugin if you're using Apache server which can cope with sudden bandwidth increases and requests.
