Update 2: MIUI 9 Global Stable ROM is Rolling out to the Mi 6 and Mi Max 2.
Update 3: Nougat is being rolled out to Redmi 4 in India. No news about 4A
Xiaomi at an event in Beijing, China, unveiled the most anticipated Custom User Interface MIUI 9 which is based on Android 7.0 Nougat. Xiaomi also Unveiled the Mi5X smartphone which is the first smartphone to receive MIUI 9, Mi AI speaker which will be the competitor to Google Home and Alexa.
The MIUI 9 update is said to offer:
- Faster app launch times
- Intelligent CPU acceleration
- A more dynamic resource allocation for a fluid experience
- Optimized Haptic feedback
- Optimized Thread Scheduling
- Split Screen Feature
- New design elements
- Shortcuts on Lock screen
- Improved Cache management
- System Optimisation(See image below)
There are 3 Main features that set the MIUI 9 apart from MIUI 8:
- Image Search
- Smart Assistant
- Smart App launcher
Image Search
The 'Image Search' feature is an exciting new feature for Xiaomi Devices, but not so exciting if you have used the Photos app by Google.
The Mi gallery uses an algorithm to identify what objects are there in the photo. After identifying they assign the photo to the associated keywords, hence when you type the wanted keyword, the associated images will come up. You can hence filter out your photos by people, location, events etc.

Smart Assistant
Swiping to the right will bring up the Smart Assistant. It can be used to find anything from images to apps to even notes. We can't compare it to Google Assistant until we get our hands on the device.
Smart App Launcher
Smart App launcher will suggest some apps to launch based on the content of the screen. For example, if you are talking about going somewhere, it will suggest opening Maps.
When I heard about this Feature, I quickly thought about Google On Tap, which also provides relevant content based on the contents on the screen.

One of the most missed features was the split-screen, and Xiaomi is rectifying that mistake with MIUI 9. The multi-windows mode allows you to run 2 apps side by side, which comes really useful in devices with large screens.
After reading all these amazing features of MIUI 9, the burning question inside you will be: When will I get MIUI 9? So to answer the question:
August 11
The first MIUI 9 rollout is going to happen for:
Mi 6, Mi 5X and Redmi Note 4X(Qualcomm variant)
August 25
The second phase of the MIUI rollout will happen for:
Xiaomi Mi MIX, Mi Note 2, Mi 5, Mi 5s, Mi 5s Plus, Mi 5c, Mi Max 2, Mi Max, Mi 4S, Mi 4c, Mi Note Pro, and Redmi 4X.
Rest of the phones(Exempting Mi 1/1S and Mi 2A) will get the update by late September.
CONCLUSION
MIUI launched their first ROM back in 2010. Seven Years later, they have racked up 2.8 Billion active users, using it in 55 languages, in 142 countries. A big Salute to Xiaomi for making a really amazing User Interface. In my opinion, the main reason I love Xiaomi is that of MIUI.
