Gigabyte Sabre 17 Laptop review

Gigabyte has released the new Sabre series of Gaming laptops that is well designed and provides good all round gaming performance. Gigabyte Sabre 17 is a mid-range gaming laptop which is in the $1000-$2000 gaming market. This is a budget gaming laptop for those people who don’t have thick wallets. The device is priced at around $1500.

Gigabyte Sabre 17

As far a the first impression goes, according to me the device is a pleasure to look at. With the 17.3 inch Full HD IPS panel and sturdy hinges it is perfect for gaming. The Sabre 17 comes with a 1920 x 1080p resolution with 60 Hz refresh rate. The only drawback with the display is that the GSync is not supported.

LED Keyboard with FlexiKey Software

Moving on to the keyboard, it is led back-light with Flexi Key- Software macro Function which is not a surprise in gaming laptops like this. The keys are very comfortable to use with a travel distance of 2 mm but is slightly mushier than we like. The Laptop weighs at a whopping 3.1 kg which is quite justifiable considering the large selection of IO ports.

At the top right side we can see the power button, and the speaker grill which runs horizontally along the right hand side. Also there is a headphone jack, a microphone jack, USB 2.0 port and a USB 3.0 port.At the bottom edge, we can see 4 LED lights which indicate the Power, Battery, Charging and Disk Usage of the device.

The hinges of the laptop are quite sturdy and is very durable. The top display flexes a little when pressed hard at the edges but it is quite common in mid-range laptops like this.

At the left side of the laptop we can see DC power port, an Ethernet jack, two mini HDMI, USB Type C port, regular USB and a SD card slot. On the right side, we can see two audio ports, two regular USB ports and an air vent for cooling.

The laptop also has dual array microphones which improves the noise cancellation which in turn helps with video conferencing, live streaming etc.

GAME-PLAY PERFORMANCE AND BATTERY LIFE

We tried many games on the Sabre 17 and it performed better than we expected. When playing Total War - A game that put more load on the CPU than GPU in most areas, the laptop scored a respectable 38.6 frames per second. When the graphics were sacrificed a little bit, the frame rate rose to 75 fps.

During our benchmark tests with PC Mark, the battery lasted for only 1 hr. and 40 min which is poor considering the price point of this laptop. This makes it unreliable for long mobile gaming sessions.

CONCLUSION

Now coming to the crucial part, is the Gigabyte Sabre 17 worth it? Yes and No, it depends on your usage scenarios. If you are a casual gamer who just wants to game without tweaking down the settings, then this laptop is not for you.

But if you spent a little bit of time tweaking the settings, you will catch gold with this laptop. When the graphics settings are tweaked perfectly the device had a great balance between performance and battery life and the gaming experience was just marvelous.
